Enhancing Middle School Facilities at Appleby College

Dalton partnered with Appleby College—an independent day and boarding school located in Oakville, ON—to expand and renew its middle school facility: Barr Commons. The project included a build-out of a new middle school locker area and commons space, a renovation of Appleby’s Student Success Centre and the addition of a new 1,700 sq. ft. design tech lab—all strategic needs that were identified in the school’s 2014 master campus planning exercise.

Dalton completed the $1.4 million project in a 6-month timeframe in the summer 2016. Acting as Construction Managers, we successfully executed the project, in the heart of the campus, ensuring minimal disruption.

Project schedules and budgets were outlined in meticulous detail, with regular progress updates and early identification and resolution of issues throughout the project. For example, materials deliveries were coordinated directly with the school and timing was strictly enforced to ensure school operations were carried out without delays, inconvenience and ensuring safety of everyone at all times.

The design of various spaces in Appleby’s Barr Commons had to comply with specific technical details; including adequate soundproofing and high-quality finishes. Also, exterior finishes were required to tie into the east side of the campus to the school’s future athletics complex.

The project involved occupancy in two phases and furthermore Dalton worked with the School to adjust construction hoardings throughout the build to ensure staff and students had required access to specified areas adjacent to the build site at key times during construction timeframe. Dalton’s team strictly enforced health and safety regulations to achieve a zero-incident record.
