Nia Centre for the Arts

Project Type

Adaptive Reuse

Date of Completion

October 2023

The NIA Centre for the Arts is Canada’s first professional Black Arts Centre in Toronto’s vibrant Eglinton West neighbourhood. Dalton led the complex transformation of a 100-year-old city-owned building that required a complete structural overhaul, including the demolition and reconstruction of the entire west wall and the addition of a basement.

The result is a modern 12,900 sq. ft. hub to showcase Afro-diasporic art while nurturing and cultivating creative talent. The performing arts and culture centre covers an area of 2,500 sq. ft., featuring a performance hall, dance studio, and digital media lab designed with state-of-the-art acoustics to provide the ultimate creative space. Additionally, the centre includes a visual arts studio and co-working spaces.

We are proud to have contributed to this significant performing arts project, particularly with the unique partnership that comes with building for a not-for-profit, community-driven organization.
