A Peak Behind the Curtain Wall: Leading the Installation of a Glass & Aluminum Enclosure at Aurora United Church

The grandeur of Aurora United Church’s new, main steeple came into clearer focus with the recent installation of its curtain wall system.
For a community that lost the original church to fire, this milestone offers a visual reminder that a new place for gathering is nearing completion, thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support for The Church’s “Rising from the Ashes” campaign.
In mid-August, over 100 glass panels were installed expeditiously by Dalton trade partners Built Rite Tech on the six-story steeple along Aurora’s busy downtown corridor: Yonge Street.
Successfully executing the installation required considerable teamwork and a traffic control plan to ensure the safety of the glass installation crew, pedestrians and drivers.
Tinted emerald-green panels installed in a pre-determined sequence create the towering image of a cross on three sides of the steeple.
Designing and building the church’s entire curtain wall system—which is comprised of almost 250 panels—was carefully managed by Dalton to ensure the vision for the design by the project’s Architect, Murphy Partners, was brought to life.
With the largest panels on the steeple tipping the scales at over 250 lbs., it is imperative that the structural steel and aluminum framing would support the curtain of glass. As Construction Manager, Dalton provided the necessary leadership throughout the design and construction of the curtain wall system, orchestrating the cadence of review and approvals with the Aurora United Church, the architect and numerous trade partners and consultants.
Our team ensured the manufacturing and delivery schedule of the curtain wall system aligned with construction activities on site. More specifically, our team coordinated all scopes of work (e.g., structural, masonry, EFIS, etc.) to ensure the window openings for each panel in the church were designed and built to properly receive the curtain wall system.
