Nia Centre for the Arts
Renovation & Addition
Dalton managed the renovation of 524 Oakwood Avenue, a 12,900 sq. ft. building owned by the City of Toronto, transforming it into the new home of the Nia Centre for the Arts. The project included the development of a performance hall, state-of-the-art studios, an event space, a kitchen and dining room, offices, and an art gallery.
The Nia Centre is Canada's first multidisciplinary professional arts space dedicated to showcasing art from the African diaspora.
Over the past 100 years, the building has undergone various renovations and repurposings, serving as a theatre, dance hall, bowling alley, and, most recently, a public health center. This has created a complex adaptive reuse project.
The renovation involved constructing two significant spaces that were not part of the original layout:
A 2,500-square-foot, two-story performance hall with a seating capacity of 150.
The addition of a basement. Together with the structural engineering team, Dalton oversaw the excavation of a 10-foot-deep basement utilizing the bench footing method.
