Southdown Institute
New Facility
The new Southdown Institute spans 33,000 square feet and includes private client rooms, therapy rooms, offices, administrative spaces, a complete commercial kitchen, dining areas, meeting rooms, social gathering spaces, and a chapel. Located in a rural area without services, the site features a well water supply and treatment system, a septic system, storage provisions for water for the building's sprinkler system, and a pond that is part of the stormwater control system and provides water for firefighting.
The design of both the building and the site was carefully considered to meet all functional requirements while preserving the natural state of the area. The facility was constructed primarily of wood with various wood finishes, complementing the natural reserve and important watershed nearby. In 2014, the project was honored with a Wood Design Award from the Ontario Wood WORKS! Program for its innovative use of wood in construction.
